Vote Because You Want To

Excuse me for a second while I get on my soap box.

I don’t know about everybody else, but I am just about sick of listening to all these so-called “celebrities” or people of special importance telling me how important it is to vote.

If you have watched just about any television over the last couple of months, then you probably have seen all the commercials and guest appearances from these people discussing how important it is to vote.

The whole sequence usually goes something like this:

Host: So are you following the election?

Celebrity: um… Yeah, I think it is really important. This is an important election, and its time for change. We can make a difference.

Obviously, this sounds like some pre-scripted answer. The most annoying part comes after that set of dialogue:

Host: Is there any candidate you are supporting or issues that are important to you?

Celebrity: Blah, Blah, Blah… I really don’t know what I am talking about. I didn’t even care about the previous elections. I am trying to look more knowledgeable on the subject than I really am.

I’d rather them just be quite and not say anything. Some of you probably think I am crazy, but there are many of you know exactly what I’m talking about.

While I don’t mind these “icons” spreading the whole idea of voting, it really annoys me when they start getting specific and talking about politics. For the most part, it is obvious they have no idea what they are talking about. Half these celebrities will probably end up not voting anyways.

To be honest, I could careless if you vote or not or who you vote for. As an American citizen, we all have our individual right to decide whether we want to vote or not and who we want to vote for.

In the end, people should vote because they want to not because somebody said it was important to them. It is nice that we are generating record number of registered voters, but isn’t quality better than quantity? Wouldn’t it be better to have people who know the differences vote than just have people voting for the more popular choice?

Which leads me to my question…

Did some celebrity cause you to register to vote when you weren’t? Are you going to vote a certain way because of a celebrity?
