Managing Portfolio out of the Country

Dec 23rd, 2007 | By TheWild1 | Category: Financial Markets

So it has been about 4 days since I landed in India, and it marked the first time that I would be managing my portfolio outside of the U.S. When I normally go on domestic vacations, internet is pretty much located everywhere. Sometimes you have to pay a small fee, but nonetheless, you can pretty much access it whenever you want.

Different story in India. Since I am staying with some relatives internet access is not as convenient as I am used to. Rather then just paying a regular monthly fee, here they charge you by how much internet is being used, and the quality is probably similar to DSL. So when the internet is not being used they turn it off. Although it might not seem like much to turn it on, if you only have a couple minutes then you might not think it is worth the trouble to go and switch it on.

Other then that the timezone difference is pretty large. I think it is about 11 hours different from my home the the U.S. Now I knew there was a time change but I didn’t think it would be so confusing at first. I find myself forgetting that we are ahead, so things that should of already happened at a certain time have not. Almost like I traveled into the further. So time becomes an issue.

Before I left I made sure to rid of all my more “riskier” positions, and just stay with my long quality stocks. This way I don’t really have to worry about day to day happenings in the market. Just check in here and there and make sure no sudden collapse has happened.

On the plus I think managing my portfolio from outside the country has made it a more efficient task. No more wondering into hundreds of stories on what a stock is doing. I just find what I need to know and move on.

It is always a plus when you are making money on a vacation.
