Is Cable TV Dying?
Let me first start off with saying I can never imagine no cable television service in my house, but that is because I am a tv fanatic; however, there are many who are not.
In an increasing trend to try and cut back expenses, many are beginning to potentially look at cutting their cable tv. Just the thought of that idea leaves me in goosebumps, but, when I really break it down, would life really be any different without cable? Perhaps even more efficient?
Here is a breakdown of some of the reasons why the thought of ditching cable nerves me:
Network shows
Whether it be Lost, CNBC, or even Nick at Night, I couldn’t imagine missing these shows.
The “No Cable” Solution
Almost all channels broadcast shows directly off their website. Although, you might have to wait a couple hours later, the option is there. Also with sites like Hulu, watching shows online is becoming easier. You can even now watch it off your Xbox.
I like to watch the 90’s shows like Fresh Prince or Home Improvement. Nowadays season DVD’s can be bought. Even though it might cost more in the short run, it could payoff in the long term.
Movies
Although not everybody subscribe to the movie channels, I do, and its always nice to have that option to just find a movie and start watching it.
The “No Cable” Solution
With services like Netflix or Blockbuster, for a small fee basically an unlimited amount of movies can be watched when you want. You might even want to check out Apple TV, where you can watch tons of choices instantly.
Sports
I am HUGE sports fanatic, and although most top games air on the local channels, there are those that come on ESPN or TNT.
The “No Cable” Solution
There really is no true solution for sports. Unlike others shows that can be watched at later times, sports NEED to be watched when its live. If you really need to cutback, then you could always listen to the radio coverage, go to a sports bar, or mooch off a friend. Nobody said saving money was easy.
Should I Phase Out My Cable Subscription
I probably could, but I most likely will not; however, that is not to say you couldn’t. After all, I am weak when it comes to the tv. I need it at all times. Even if I’m not watching.
Times have changed now. No more does it seem weird for households to not have cable. There are even cheaper cable solution popping up for online use. Phone services are moving over the internet and so is cable. That is business lost for companies like Comcast and Verizon.
Whats the trend here? Will there be a time when people with cable are in the minority? When there is a feeling of uncertainty, I like to stay away from these sectors, but I’ll continue to buy my cable.
